Booked For The Week

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 July 2018: The business events industry in Malaysia will be penetrating a new discipline with the IFLA World Library and Information Congress' 84th IFLA General Conference and Assembly (IFLA WLIC) 2018.

Supported by Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and organised by Librarians Association of Malaysia, IFLA WLIC 2018 is slated to take place from the 24th -30th August 2018 at the award-winning Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

"We are excited this time for IFLA WLIC 2018. It is an uncharted industry for us and to have a near century-old Conference coming to Malaysia, I have to thank the organisers as well as The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) as the governing body to place their faith in the local team and the destination," said Datuk Zulkefli Hj. Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of MyCEB.

Themed Transform Libraries, Transform Societies, the annual Conference is expected to open new horizons as it focuses on providing invaluable information to specialists with a forum as a platform. The Forum is known to productively provide a stage for ideas exchange, promotion of international cooperation, refining research and development in all fields of library activities as well as other up-to-date information services.

While Malaysia is well-known to host medical, science & technology and education as well as meetings and incentive trips, MyCEB and industry partners never stop pushing for a wider target audience because of the destination’s potential and areas of expertise in organising major events.

Datuk Zulkefli is also proud to announce, "with the expected arrivals of 3,000 delegates from over 140 countries, IFLA WLIC 2018 is estimated to generate RM 44.4 million in economic impact. Not only the figure is a boost to the industry, but the country will see its strategy in moving towards strengthening of commercial environments and remaining globally competitive realised".

In the macro point of view, IFLA WLIC 2018 will spur growth for IT sector when it comes to library management systems and best practices. As a result, information services will see an opportunity to progress with the knowledge shared from global experts.

The business opportunities generated will also see the Conference being a profound contributor in achieving the goal of creating 3.3 million new jobs for Malaysians with a Gross National Income per capita of USD 15,000 by the year of 2020.

As the Conference will be held a week before the country’s Independence Day, more than 2,200 international delegates of the total arrivals can also expect to experience Malaysia at the peak of its patriotism.

"While the country is going through changes, one thing will never change, the Malaysian hospitality. It is a timely event for our international delegates to see what is it like to celebrate the National Independence Day, or Merdeka on 31st August. The annual national parade will happen at the Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur as well as pocket of activities to celebrate this event," concluded Datuk Zulkefli.
