The Evolution of Obesity: The Past, Present and The Future
Obesity is defined as excess fat. It is a complex condition determined by genes, biological system, environmental and behavior factors. In the past, obesity was viewed as ‘prosperous’ or ‘wealthy’ in many ancient cultures. Medical understanding was limited with obesity not seen as a health issue but more of a moral failing or personal weakness. Obesity is now considered a global health epidemic issue that needs a multifaceted approach that involves prevention, treatment and policy intervention. Obesity treatments can be traced back to Ancient Greek and Roman times. Then, it was mainly ‘eat less, move more’. There were also some weight loss drugs. Surgical attempts were risky. Later, the perception of the ‘perfect body’ and societal ideal of slimness sparked a wide range of drugs and even ‘quack remedies’. But, safety concerns for such drugs were reported. Today, the treatment is now based on biological and behavioral model. The pharmacotherapy of obesity landscape has evolved with many promising potential novel targets for therapeutic intervention. In the future, personalized therapies in the form of precision medicine, next generation drugs with less side effects and greater weight loss, gene editing, microbiome engineering and digital and artificial intelligence integration will be the way forward. This ice breaker talk will bring you on a journey of obesity evolution from the past, to present and to the future.

Ancient Wisdom for Modern Fatigue: A TCM Perspective on Stress and Energy Balance
In today's fast-paced, high-pressure world, more individuals are experiencing persistent fatigue, mental burnout, and sub-health conditions—despite appearing “well” on paper. This presentation explores how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with its roots in ancient wisdom, offers practical and holistic strategies to restore energy, regulate stress, and maintain long-term wellbeing.
Janice will guide the audience through the TCM view of chronic fatigue and stress, introducing key diagnostic methods such as pulse and tongue analysis, and the concept of 辨证论治 (pattern differentiation). She will explain common patterns behind modern fatigue, including Liver Qi stagnation, Spleen Qi deficiency, and Kidney Yang deficiency—each with its unique symptoms and implications. The session also highlights TCM treatment methods, such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, cupping, tuina, and guasha, alongside lifestyle practices rooted in TCM philosophy. More than just a medical approach, this talk is a gentle reminder that energy is the foundation of productivity, and health is not a luxury but a priority.

Ms. Janice Tew Xiaoxi
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner
Janice Tew Xiaoxi is a qualified Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner dedicated to promoting holistic health through time-honored healing methods grounded in classical Chinese medicine. She holds a Bachelor of Chinese Medicine from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and a Master of Chinese Medicine from the prestigious Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SHUTCM), where she deepened her clinical knowledge and integrative treatment skills.

Janice’s main clinical interests lie in managing sub-health conditions, as well as addressing gynaecological and gastrointestinal issues through a TCM lens. Her approach emphasizes balance, preventative care, and individualized treatment, drawing on both classical theories and modern clinical practice. She is particularly passionate about helping patients who experience chronic fatigue, menstrual disorders, digestive irregularities, and stress-related imbalances—conditions that often fall between the cracks of conventional diagnosis but are well addressed in Chinese medicine. As the ice breaker speaker for Malaysia Business Event Week, Janice will be presenting on the topic “Ancient Wisdom for Modern Fatigue: A TCM Perspective on Stress and Energy Balance.”

Her session will offer an accessible introduction to the core principles of TCM, highlighting how ancient diagnostic frameworks can help us understand and manage today’s rising cases of stress-related fatigue and burnout. With a growing number of individuals operating in a state of chronic overdrive, Janice aims to shed light on the TCM approach to restoring qi (vital energy), regulating the nervous system, and preventing long-term health deterioration. Her talk will serve as a gentle yet powerful reminder of the importance of balance—not just in health, but in how we live and work.
